Princess Mathilde and Prince Philip of Belgium announced on Thursday that Count Patrick d’Udekem d’Acoz, father of Princess Mathilde, passed away in Ottignies, aged 72.
The Count had been seriously ill since the beginning of this year, and remained in a coma for two weeks in April - at the same time Mathilde gave birth to her fourth child, in the same hospital were her father was kept. Count Patrick was taken to a neurlogical centre in Ottignies last week Friday; his wife and children stayed at his bedside most of the time.
Patrick d’Udekem d’Acoz married Mathilde’s mother, Polish born countess Anne Komorowski in 1971. They had five children, one of Mathilde’s younger sisters died in a car accident. D’Udekem d’Acoz was elevated to Count upon the marriage in December 1999 of his daughter to the Duke of Brabant, the heir to the throne of Belgium. © GPD
