'Make a Difference Day' it was once called, the day on which volunteers help organisations to get ready for a new season. Benches are cleaned, walls are painted, and in the case of Queen Beatrix and her sister Princess Margriet, minihorses and donkeys are thoroughly combed and cared for.
'Make a Difference Day' is called 'NL Doet' (does) in The Netherlands and is held under supervision of the Orange Fund, the large charity Prince Willem-Alexander and Princess Máxima received as a national gift for their wedding in 2002. As patrons of the Fund they volunteer to join in the myriad of activities held all over the country.
Queen Beatrix went with part of her family to Dordrecht, where they helped out in a city park and children's farm by cleaning picknick benches and taking care of the animals. Willem-Alexander and Máxima were to Utrecht where they went bowling and had lunch with the homeless. © RB; Pictures by © RB and Oranjefonds Bart Homberg
