The ambassadors of Greece, Argentina, Germany and the People’s Republic of China were the last ones invited to present their credentials to out going Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands. The next batch of diplomats will be received at Noordeinde Palace by the new King Willem-Alexander.
The 4 ambassadors were fortunate their presentation could still be scheduled before the abdication of the queen and the inauguration of the king. Diplomats are not allowed to start their work at their designed posting before they have offered their credentials.
They would have missed the ceremony in Amsterdam’s Nieuwe Kerk on April 30 if they had not made the trip to the Palace first. And that would also have been unpleasant for the Netherlands, with the diplomatic representatives of Argentina – Princess Máxima’s native country -, neighbouring Germany and powerful China in the batch.
Queen Beatrix sends out a carriage to collect each of the ambassadors, who is than escorted to the Palace where a military band strikes up the national anthem of the ambassador’s country. He or she is than invited in for a meeting with the queen, who is usually joined by the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
