Belgium will not be short of kings and queens after the abdication of present King Albert II on July 21. He will keep his title as his son Philip will become King Philip.
In Belgium, unlike in neighbouring the Netherlands, the retired head of state keeps his or her title. Queen Beatrix lost hers upon her abdication in April. She is now Princess Beatrix again.
In the same way Belgium will have no less than 3 queens: the new Queen Mathilde, her mother in law Queen Paola, and the Queen-dowager Fabiola.
