King (czar) Simeon II of the Bulgarians had been in touch with former Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands about the cruel fate that had befallen their sons. Beatrix' son Prince Friso, 44, passed away earlier this week after suffering fatal brain damage in a skiing accident in February 2012. Simeon's son Prince Kardam marks nearly five years in coma after a car crash on 15 August 2008, exactly five years on Thursday.
King Simeon, in a rare interview accorded to the Dutch magazine Royalty last year, spoke of the pain of the Bulgarian royal family. A pain which was shared with the Dutch royal family at that time. It was a heavy burden, Simeon said during the meeting in the Royal Palace in Sofia. 'But that is life', he added. 'It is a cross we have to bear'.
The prince who suffered severe brain skull trauma in the car accident, was briefly released from hospital in January 2009 and was slowly recovering at home. Kardam said to able to stand and communicate. One year later however he suffered a critical setback and was re-hospitalized. He remains in a coma since.
Last year October the King said "Kardam's condition continues to be very serious, but I am deeply moved by the fact that many people in Bulgaria are with us in our prayers and wishes for his recovery." Some of the world's most renowned neurologists have been summoned to help with his son's recovery, he added. "It is very tough for us, but we will never give up our hope."
Royalblog reported the accident of Prince Kardam (Кардам) in August 2008:Prince Kubrat of Bulgaria told journalists outside the Hospital Doce de Octubre that the state of health of his brother Prince Kardam has not undergone any changes since his admission to hospital on Friday.
The royal family is "optimistic" about the outcome, Prince Kubrat said. Kardam is in the intensive care unit of the hospital, after a car crash in El Molar, near Madrid. He is expected to stay there for the next three or five days.Prince Kardam, who was born in Madrid, was visited in hospital by his mother Queen Margarita and his siblings Kubrat, Kiryl and Konstantin. Kardam's wife Princess Miriam, who was travelling with him, is also in a Madrid hospital, suffering relatively minor injuries in the accident. The couple, who married in 1996, have two children, Boris and Beltran.
Kardam, the eldest son of former King Simeon II, collided with his Jaguar against a tree, veered off, with the car overturning. Kardam and his wife Princess Miriam, who was travelling with him, were trapped in the car. The Fire Brigade had to free them from their car.
