The Crown Prince of Tonga, Tupouto‘a Lavaka, has started a new job on Thursday, as he presented his credentials to the Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, Sir Michael Jeffery, as Tonga’s first ever High Commissioner to Australia.
The announcement of his appointment was made earlier this month, while the Crown Prince (pictured with his Japanese colleague Naruhito) was attending the Beijing Olympics. “The appointment of His Royal Highness signifies the importance which His Majesty‘s Government places on the close and cordial relationship between Tonga and Australia,” said Tonga's Prime Minister Sevele.
The appointment was formally approved by King Siaosi Tupou V, the older brother of the Crown Prince, on 25 July 2008 on the recommendation of the Tonga Cabinet. The Australian Government welcomed Tonga’s request to establish a diplomatic mission in Canberra.
Sir Michael Jeffery already met the new High Commissioner while he visited Tonga for the Coronation of King Tupou V at the beginning of August. According to PM Sevele has the Prince the necessary status, rank and experience to serve as High Commissioner.
The Prince previously served as Prime Minister, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Defence, Minister for Civil Aviation, Minister responsible for Communications, Minister for Marine and Ports, Minister for Works and Disaster Relief Activities, Minister for Agriculture and Forestry, and Minister for Fisheries. © GPD: Source: Prime Minister's Office
