How many stamps does a Queen need? Not too many as Dutch Queen Beatrix showed earlier this week as she preordered only a few stamp blocks in support of children’s charities.
This year marks the 60th year Dutch elementary school children go door to door all across to country to sell stamps, which have a surcharge in benefit of the charities. This year the money thus collected is in aid of an organisation that aims to prevent bullying.
Because of the 60th anniversary the queen agreed to be the first to order the stamps and assorted postcards that come with them. And because of the anniversary she bought 60 euro worth of stamps and cards.
A ten year old schoolgirl from Waarder, Ilse Hagoort, was chosen to take the queen’s order at Huis ten Bosch Palace. The queen took time with her schoolclass, and asked the children whether they had experienced bullying in school.
Beatrix told them she had herself, in the late forties when she returned from exile in Canada. She was bullyed because she had different war time experiences, better clothing and food.
