Even as Flemish lawmakers want to end her state allowance, granted to her by the Belgian government after the death of her husband King Baudouin, Queen Fabiola at age 80, does not slow down.
Queen Fabiola on Monday will attend the festivities of ‘Santa María de Guadelupe’, patron saint of Guadelupe, in the autonomous region of Extremadura in the heart of Spain. The Virgin of Guadelupe, patron saint of Extremadura and ''Reina de las Españas' has a connection with the Low Countries (the Spanish Netherlands) through Infanta Isabel Clara Eugenia, daughter of Spanish King Philip II.
The Spanish born Belgian queen traditionally spends part of the summer at her holiday retreat in Motril, up the Mediterranean coast from Malaga and south of Granada.
Motril in the past week commemorated with lectures, a mucic festival and a golf tournament the 15th anniversary of the death of Fabiola’s husband King Baudouin, who passed away in Villa Astrida, the holiday home in Motril. It was Motril’s way of showing its appreciation for the King and Queen, who in turn had shown such love for the Andulucian town.
Queen Fabiola on Sunday evening attended Mozart’s Coronation Mass at Motril’s Iglesia Mayor de la Encarnación. The Mass was the culmination and grand finale of the 1st International Festival of Sacred Music ‘King Baudouin’ (Festival Internacional de Música Sacra Rey Balduino), held in honour of the late king. © GPD Netherlands Press Association
