Dutch Queen Beatrix sent a congratulatory telegram to U.S. President Barack Obama and wished him "much success." The Dutch monarch was one of many heads of states, queens, kings, princes and presidents who sent messages to the new American president, who took the oath of office on Tuesday. Dutch Crown Prince Willem-Alexander spoke of a ‘momentous’ occasion when commenting on the inauguration of Mr Obama. He said African friends had called the event "possibly even more important for the world than the release from prison of Mr Nelson Mandela." Princess Máxima said she hoped Obama would be able to live up to the "enormous expectations of the world." Mr Obama is the fifth U.S. president in the reign of Queen Beatrix, who paid a State Visit to the United States during the tenure of President Ronald Reagan. She also visited Washington during President Clinton’s term in office. The Dutch Prime Minister reminded President Obama of the long-standing bonds of friendship between The Netherlands and the United States, dating back 400 years to the foundation of present-day New York (New Amsterdam) in 1609. British Queen Elizabeth too sent a message to Mr Obama, who is the eleventh U.S. president to hold that office since she succeeded her late father King George VI in February 1952.
