Luxembourg’s Grand-Duchess Maria Teresa embarked on a tour of the East African countries Burundi and Kenya, Sunday. She does so in her capacity of UNICEF’s ‘Eminent Advocate for Children’, in conjunction with the 20th anniversary of the International Convention of Children’s Rights. Maria Teresa started her tour In Burundi, where she visits various programmes and projects: re-education of child soldiers, projects for young mothers, who have been victims of rape, as well as the Bujumbura prison, where she will talk with mothers who are incarcerated there and who have given birth to children while in prison. Young orphans, who lost their parents due to AIDS or who have the illness themselves, are also at the center of attention during the four day visit to Burundi. From there the Grand-Duchess goes to Kenya, where she will attend the international conference ‘Diagnostic to Action - Microfinance in Africa’, organised by the Women’s World Banking. During the June 4-5 visit Maria Teresa will also go to the Dream Center (Drug Resource Enhancement against Aids and Malnutrition), which in an exemplary way deals with the problems families with AIDS face. © HJ
