Outgoing President Valdas Adamkus of Lithuania sent congratulations to King Harald V of Norway on the occasion of Norway’s Constitution Day, May 17. President Adamkus underlined that today's relationship between Norway and Lithuania was founded on mutual trust and close partnership. He called on the two countries to further strengthen unity between the Baltic and Nordic states and promote bilateral and regional cooperation ties in the fields of security, economy, environmental protection, and culture. * No better way than to start Norway’s national day celebrations than winning the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest. Alexander Rybak crushed all opposition and gained Europe wide support for his ‘Fairytale’. "I am confident that your country will continue to be a close friend of Lithuania, an ardent advocate of common values and the architect of a secure and prosperous transatlantic space. I am sincerely looking forward to our meeting at the celebrations of the Millennium of Lithuania in Vilnius on July 6," Mr. Adamkus (photo below, at the ballot box) wrote in his letter of congratulations. * The European Union's budget chief easily won the first round of Lithuania's presidential election Sunday and could become the country's first woman head of state, an exit poll showed. But it was unclear whether the turnout would be high enough for Dalia Grybauskaite, the EU budget commissioner and a karate black-belt, to do that without facing a runoff. © GPD; Photos by © GPD AP (Moscow); Dutch Photo Press (Norway)
