Queen Fabiola brandished a green apple from her purse, garnering grins from Prince Philip and his wife, mocking her would-be assassin during the traditional military parade marking Belgium’s national day Tuesday. Spanish born Queen Fabiola is the widow of King Baudouin, who died in 1993. Baudouin was succeeded by his younger brother, Albert, while Fabiola kept her official title of queen. © GPD (AP) The 81-year old Queen had received a death threat in May. A letter was sent to a Belgian newspaper by an unknown group threatening to kill Fabiola with a crossbow during Tuesday's festivities.
Belgian newspapers reported that Queen Fabiola would be wearing a bullet proof vest under her dress. She insisted she would attend the festivities and to make her point she showed the apple, in a reference to Swissman’s William Tell’s legendary exploiuts with a crossbow and an apple.
