Dutch Prince Willem-Alexander and his wife Princess Máxima stood silently in the rain as they joined New Yorkers and other Americans Friday morning in Zucotti Park for the eighth commemoration of the infamous attacks on the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center on 11 September 2001.
They came to Ground Zero to ‘show the solidarity of The Netherlands with all the victims and their relatives, with New York and with the United States". Argentina-born Princess Máxima had not long before the attacks ended her banking career in New York and moved to Europe, where her engagement to the Dutch Crown Prince was announced in March 2001.
The Princess personally people who worked in the WTC. After the observance of a moment silence at 08.46 AM and 09.03 AM, the time the hijacked planes crashed into the Twin Towers, the royal party went to the Collegiate West End Church for a memorial service, held both in Dutch and English.
