“HM Queen Anne-Marie and I are delighted to announce the engagement of our son Nikolaos to Tatiana Blatnik.” King Constantine of the Hellenes posted the briefest of messages on the website of the Greek Royal Family Monday to announce the long expected engagement of his second son, Prince Nikolaos.
According to Greek gossip tv programmes Nikolaos, 40, proposed to Ms Tatiana Blatnik, his long time girlfriend, Sunday while the pair were vacationing with the royal family in Porto-Heli in Greece. No further details have been given. When and where the wedding will be held is not yet known.
Prince Nikolaos was born October 1, 1969, two years after his family had to flee Greece, after a failed coup attempt against the military junta. King Constantine first settled in Rome, where Nikolaos or Nicholas, was born, before moving to London. The prince is now living in Chelsea and working for his father's private office.
About Tatiana Blatnik, said to be born in 1980, little is known officially. She is believed to be a granddaughter of the late John A. Blatnik, a former member of the US House of Representatives for Minnesota. Her greatgrandparents are of Slovene descent.
She has been seeing Nikolaos for at least five years and has attended numerous royal events with him, including the wedding of Nikolaos' cousin Prince Joachim of Denmark last year May (picture). Nikolaos' elder sister Alexia and brother Pavlos (Paul) are already married and have large families of their own.
The Greek junta abolished the monarchy in June 1973, a decision which was supported by a majority of the population in a referendum in 1974. Only in recent years has King Constantine and his family been allowed and/or been able to return and travel to his homeland freely. © GPD; Photo by © Dutch Photo Press, Patrick van Katwijk
