Spain's future King, Prince Felipe, and his wife Princess Letizia stood in for Spain's royal couple, Monday has they hosted a gala dinner at the Royal Palace for leaders of the European Union and Latin American countries, who are in Madrid for a summit.
* Felipe raises a toast with Colombian President Alvaro Uribe, Finland's President Tarja Halonen, Argentina's President Cristina Kirchner and Bolivian President Evo Morales.
King Juan Carlos did not attend, on advise of his doctors. The 72-year old monarch has just undergone surgery and needs to rest. Felipe knows most of the Latin American present, as he has attended most of their presidential inaugurations as chosen representative of Spain and his father, the King.

Just after the King's surgery doctors thought Juan Carlos would be able to attend the important summit. And although his recovery is said to be going well, it was decided Felipe and Letizia would do the honours.
* Mexico's President Felipe Calderon and his wife Margarita Zavala are welcomed by Letizia and Felipe.
The EU-Latin America summit here lasts through Wednesday, and during it the EU is expected to sign trade accords with Peru, Colombia and Central America.
* Letizia and Felipe welcome Argentina's President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner.
