Buckingham Palace says Prince Philip has had surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome, a common painful condition caused by the compression of a nerve in the wrist. The palace says the Duke of Edinburgh was admitted as a day patient at undisclosed hospital Monday for surgery on his left hand.
He canceled a dinner engagement in central London and is not expected to travel with Queen Elizabeth when she visits the English railway town of Crewe on Thursday, his 89th birthday.
Philip had previously been afflicted with a wrist problem caused by shaking hundreds of hands every year. He's also suffered a string of minor, mostly sports-related injuries over the years _ most recently when he hurt his ankle in a carriage driving accident in April. GPD © AP
