Brunei's Sultan marks 64th birthday

Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, marks his 64th birthday on Thursday, July 15.

He is 29th in a line of rulers of Brunei, which dates back to the 14th century. As the eldest son, he became Crown Prince on August 14, 1961 and ascended the throne on October 5, 1967, following the abdication of his father, Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien.

Sultan Bolkiah was crowned on August 1, 1968. Besides being the sultan, he is concurrently the Prime Minister, Defense Minister, Finance Minister, and head of religion of Brunei Darussalam. © GPD
