Queen Sofia was delighted at the win of Spain in the World Cup semi final against Germany (1-0) in Durban on Wednesday. Spain advances for the first time in history to the final, which will be played on Sunday in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The queen was confident Spain 'as the better team' would win against 'a good team' Germany. Immediately after the final whistle she visited the team in the locker room and congratulated and complimented them on a great performance.
Queen Sofia will stay in South Africa till after the final, in which Spain will meet The Netherlands. Sofia, as princess of Greece, spent five years of her life in South Africa, as the Greek royal family was forced to leave Greece after the Italian-German occupation of their home country during World war II.
Spanish media expect other members of the royal family to join Queen Sofia for the all important football game; possibly even King Juan Carlos, who will not want to miss out on this possibly 'once in a lifetime opportunity'.
The Dutch Government Information Service said on Wednesday that Prince Willem-Alexander and Princess Máxima had 'the intention' to attend the final, but an all out confirmation was not given. Perhaps to keep room in protocol for Queen Beatrix to follow suit of King Juan Carlos attends. The Kings of South Africa's neighbour Lesotho and Swaziland will be in town for the final.
Earlier in the football tournament Spain was supported by Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia, who travelled to South Africa for Spain's opener against Switzerland. They saw their team lose unexpectedly, but Spain has since found its competition form. © GPD; Photos: GPD © AP
