'Glückwunsch, Herr Kaiser' headlined German magazine Stern.de Thursday as Georg Friedrich Prinz von Preußen secretly wed Sophie Prinzessin von Isenburg in Potsdam.
'Congratulations, Mr. Emperor' it said as the greatgreatgrandson of Germany's last Emperor Wilhelm II exchanged vows with the bride he has known for almost all of his life, but only started to date six years ago.
German media had wondered when and where Prince Georg Friedrich and Princess Sophie would have their civil marriage ceremony, a prerequisite for the church wedding Saturday in Potsdam's Friedenskirche, next to the former Prussian royal residence Sanssouci. The answer came Thursday: in Potsdam.
Meanwhile preparations are in full swing for Germany's own 'royal wedding of the year', as the tabloid press is billing the 'Hochzeit' of the 35-year old Prince who would have been Emperor if Germany was still a monarchy. A guest list has not been handed out yet, but Romania's Crown Princess Margarita and her husband Prince Radu are attending.
The Romanian royal family belongs to a different branch of Germany's House of Hohenzollern, which has Georg Friedrich as its head since the death of his grandfather Louis Ferdinand in 1994. Louis Ferdinand's father - also named Louis Ferdinand - was the second son of Crown Prince Wilhelm, and a staunch opponent of the nazi regime, unlike other members of his family and the German royal houses.
The wedding Saturday will be broadcast live on the regional television channel RBB. © RB; Picture: Prince Radu website.
