The parish church of St Nicolas in the Austrian ski resort Lech will dedicate its Sunday afternoon Mass to Prince Friso, second son of Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands. Members of the Dutch family, who have begun to arrive for their annual skiing holiday, are not expected to attend the service.
Sunday February 17 marks the first anniversary of the skiing accident of Prince Friso. Last year while skiing off piste near Lech he was hit by an avalanche and buried under the snow for 20 minutes. The prince, who was on the last day of his skiing holiday with his family, remained without oxygen for some 50 minutes, doctors in the University Hospital in nearby Innsbruck later said in a press conference.
He suffered severe brain damage and has remained in a coma ever since. Prince Friso, 44, was taken to Wellington Hospital in London where he is being treated. The Prince and his wife Princess Mabel had lived and worked in London for several years. The couple have two daughters.
