Prince Albert II of Monaco on Tuesday arrived in Bejing to inaugurate the premises that are to serve as a base for the Principality of Monaco's presence in the Chinese capital and to meet with Chinese environmentalist and 2012 Goldman Prize winner Mr Ma Jun.
The Prince attended a reception hosted by the Embassy of Monaco, and held meetings with Chinese authorities. Albert also met with the Chinese winners of the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation award. The Prince arrived from Nanjing, where on Saturday he attended the opening ceremony of the 2nd Youth Olympic Games and met with Chinese President Xi Jinping twice. First at the official dinner preceding the Games’ opening and again on Sunday for talks.
President Xi Jinping praised the good relations with Monaco. “China has always advocated that all countries, big or small, rich or poor, strong or weak, are equal members of the international community, and should respect each other, treat each other with equality and enjoy friendly co-existence”, he said.
Prince Albert II said that both “Monaco and China enjoy profound traditional friendship and the bilateral relations have been developing smoothly”. His country was willing to strengthen cooperation with in telecommunications, eco-environmental protection, climate change and other fields, the Chinese Foreign Ministery reported.
Prince Albert said he would “promote tourism and people-to-people and cultural exchanges and create conditions to allow more Monegaque young people to learn Chinese and understand Chinese culture so as to enhance mutual understanding and friendly affection between the two peoples.”
