The King's Speech held little news observers in The Hague said after King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands addressed both Houses of Parliament in a Joint Assembly in the ancient Knight's Hall (Ridderzaal) in The Hague.
The speech, outlining government policy, mentioned the air disaster with MH17, and focused in many ways on the present world problems - from Mali to Ukraine.
Queen Máxima - in a Valentino dress - accompanied the King, and after the ride back in the so-called Golden Coach to the Palace the royal couple, along with Prince Constantijn and Princess Laurentien briefly appeared on the palace balcony.
The ceremony is held each year on the third Tuesday of September. This year marked the bicentenary of the first King's Speech or Speech from the Throne, given in May 1814 by Holland's Sovereign Prince William I - later to become King William I of the Netherlands, Grand-Duke of Luxembourg. © RB
