Dutch King hands new Standard to Marechaussee

King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands handed the Netherlands' Royal Military Police a new Standard, Thursday at the inner court of the Houses of Parliament and Knight's Hall in The Hague. The ceremony was also attended by Prince Pieter-Christiaan, who served with the RMP, or 'Koninklijke Marechaussee' as it is called in Dutch.

This month marks the Marechaussee's bicentenary. The unit was founded on 26 October 1815 by Sovereign Prince Willem Frederik, later to become King Willem I of the Netherlands, and Grand-Duke of Luxembourg. His greatgranddaughter Queen Wilhelmina assigned the task of protecting the Royal Family to the Marechaussee in 1908. "I know from personal experience how serious the Marechausse takes it task and mission", the King said. © RB
