The national funeral for Queen Fabiola of Belgium will be held Friday 12 December, the Belgian Government announced Staurday after consultations with the royal family. Queen Fabiola passed away Friday, aged 86.
The body of the dowager queen will lie in state on Wednesday and Thursday in the Royal Palace in Brussels, it was also announced. The Belgian public will have a couple of hours to pay their respects to the widow of King Baudouin, who died in 1993.
Prime Minister Charles Michel ordered the Belgian flag be flown at half staff from Staurday till the day of the funeral, as Belgium observes national mourning. King Philip and Queen Mathilde have cancelled all their engagements till Saturday. They will reschedule their meeting with Pope Francis at the Vatican, which was planned for 12 December. © RB
