Prince Friso, second son of former Dutch queen Beatrix, is being remembered in the Austrian winter resort of Lech, three years after his ultimately fatal skiing accident. In the local St Nikolaus (St Nicholas) Church his picture has been placed on an altar, with a candle, tulips and a sign askin g for prayers for ‘him, his family and his country’.
In February 2013, on the last day of his holiday, Friso was hit by an avalanche while skiing off piste with a local friend. The prince never recovered and died 18 months later at Huis ten Bosch Palace in The Hague, aged 44.
The Dutch Royal Family has been spending their winter holidays in Lech am Arlberg – a favourite with Jordan’s King Abdullah and Queen Rania as well – for over 55 years. That tradition has continued despite the dramatic and sad events of 2012. This year too Friso’s widow Princess Mabel and het children joined the rest of the family in Austria.
