Two Queens, one exhibition. A double royal inauguration is gaining popularity. On Wednesday Queen Máxima of the Netherlands and Queen Mathilde of the Belgians were at the leafy and stately Lange Voorhout in The Hague to view and open the exhibition Vormidable Contemporary Flemish Sculpture. Earlier this month Princess Beatrix was joined by Queen Sonja of Norway for the inauguration of a Munch - Van Gogh show in Oslo and next month Queen Sonja and Queen Margrethe will have a joined exhibition in Oslo.
Both Queen Máxima and Queen Mathilde, who over the years have had several joined appearances on both sides of the border, were dressed in orange, with Queen Máxima complementing her dress with a more than impressive hat. Sunny weather in The Hague added colour to the occasion, with hundreds unlookers along the Lange Voorhout which leads from the former Royal Palace Lange Voorhout to the Council of State, which is housed in the former Kneuterdijk Palace.
Queen Máxima could be forgiven for getting Queen Mathilde's title wrong when she asked somebody who had just offered her presents if she should hand one of them to Princess Mathilde [at 2:53 in video]. © RB
