Queen Paola of Belgium underwent a medical examn Tuesday, the Palace announced on Wednesday afternoon in a short statement. Based on this examination she has been advised to take a complete rest. As a consequence all activities and engagements of Queen Paola, 77, and her husband King Albert II have been canceled.

Queen Paola and King Albert were scheduled to visit the Biennale in Venice next week, their first joint official appearance in over four months. The palace declined to give further information about the state of health of the queen, who marks her 78th birthday on September 11.

Following a medical examination which took place yesterday evening, Her Majesty Queen Paola should observe a complete rest.
As a result, all planned activities and movements of Their Majesties King Albert and Queen Paola will be canceled.
