Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands reopened the new National Rescue Museum Dorus Rijkers in Den Helder. The Museum tells the story of the history of Dutch sea rescue.
The museum was founded in 1982 and moved to the former Royal Shipyard Willemsoord in 2002. In the new presentation the museum gives greater emphasis on the Royal Dutch Rescue Society, maritime disasters, search and rescue services of the Navy and Air Force and Coast Guard.
The name Dorus Rijkers is part of the name of the museum in tribute to fisherman Dorus Rijkers (1847-1928). This fishermen rescued nearly 500 people in the waters around Den Helder.
